Chronicle – The History of the Römerhof
The Römerhof has had a lively and long history. Reports of the hospitality at this idyllic spot in Dorfgastein extend all the way back to deep in the Middle Ages. Join us now on a brief journey back through time.
The “Taferne” was actually first chronicled back in the year 1340. In 1421, then Archbishop Eberhard III of Neuhaus bestowed special rights upon the popular “Taferne” in Gastein. These included the serving of “wine, spirits and mead”, as well as the sale of these same goods.
Over the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the modern era, the establishments located on the grounds of today’s Römerhof played an important role in the daily life of the area. A post station and a cosy village pub came into being. And on January 16, 1894, the inn came into the hands of the Hasenauer Family.
A new époque began in the 1950’s, including right here at the “Dorferwirth”. On the site of the ancient tavern, the Hotel Römerhof opened its doors in 1964. It quickly developed into one of the most popular hotels in the Gastein Valley. And during construction work, they managed to unearth an ancient tithe tower. Over the following decades, the tradition-rich Römerhof transformed into a modern wellness hotel. With an abundance of love and dedication, the Hasenauer family continued to renovate and expand the Römerhof. The result: awaiting you in Dorfgastein today is a house filled with history, but also one which, with respect to modern comforts and contemporary amenities, leaves no wish unfulfilled.
